Sizing the Mirror above Your Bathroom Vanity

1. You know you need it.

Have you ever been into a bathroom that didn't have a bathroom mirror? Nope. We haven't either. No bathroom is complete without a mirror for visual effect. Mirrors play a key part in our daily grooming like shaving, applying makeup, styling our hair, etc. The mirror is one of the last things we look at before leaving not only the bathroom but often, the house. Getting the right mirror to suit our needs is an art in itself. Here is a quick guide to help you choose the right sized bathroom mirror.

2. The Obvious

The best location for this type of mirror is above the bathroom vanity. It consists of the sink or basin, a top and/or storage. The size of the vanity depends on the size of the bathroom. Large master bathrooms will often utilize a double sink vanity, while smaller powder rooms will find a single vanity more appropriate. Narrow vanities are best suited for small bathrooms and usually consist of the sink only. A large bathroom space can consist of a single or double vanity that can occupy the whole length of the wall. A double vanity comes with two sinks, top counter and storage underneath. One can choose to have the mirror run the entire length of the vanity or just cover the length of the sink.

3. Measure Your Space

Take measurements of either the sink or the entire vanity and note them down. As a set rule, the mirror should measure several inches fewer on each side than the vanity or sink area. For example, if you've found a single sink 48 inch vanity for sale that you intend to use, you will want to select a mirror that's width (frame included) doesn't exceed 42-44 inches total. Some people may choose a mirror that goes to the very edge of the vanity top. This is okay, but you do not want to exceed the maximum width of the vanity's top! Modern mirrors for bathroom vanities nowadays come in all shapes, finishes, and sizes. More traditionally styled remodelers may choose something rectangular or oval in shape with a unique or ornate finish and style. Modern focused homeowners may choose something in a funky shape or size to compliment their bathroom remodel. Your main concern will be that whatever shape or size you choose will fit well with the dimensions available above the vanity you choose.

4. Consider Placement and Lighting (Natural or Not)

The size of mirror to install will depend on the size of your bathroom as well as the placement of the bathroom window. This is important in ensuring that the mirror reflects as much natural light as possible for a better visual effect. For bathrooms with small windows that may not bring in much natural light, you may need to install a light above the mirror. To maximize on natural light, especially if the bathroom window is large enough, the mirror is placed opposite the window. In cases where the bathroom might not have a window, choose the right bathroom lighting; too much lighting will cause a glare and too little will not bring enough illumination of facial features. 5. Mounting Securely

Finally, the last consideration you'll want to make note of when adding a mirror to your bathroom or anywhere else in your home décor for that matter, is the issue of mounting.
